Diwali is right around the corner and we’re all super excited for it. The lights, the food, the warmth of family and friends…what’s not to love?
We’ve spent the last few days cleaning and organising every nook and cranny of the house, shopping for clothes, picking gifts for relatives and friends … phew there is so much to do!
A very vital and fun part of the Diwali preparation is the decoration! It’s that one time in the year when we pull out all the stops to make sure that our home is at its prettiest and grandest – all ready to welcome the blessings of the gods and goddesses. While it might seem easier to just grab every option that comes easy to hand, considering the alarming state of our environment, it’s imperative that we not only live our daily lives consciously and responsibly but also celebrate our festivals that way.
So, this Diwali, celebrate a #GreenDiwaliWithBeStorified with these eco-friendly Diwali decoration ideas for home, office and school!
- Buy home decor accessories made of organic materials
Since materials such as wood, fabric, clay, terracotta, jute, cork, rattan and bamboo are derivatives of nature, they are not harmful and can be used in homes without any synthetic treatment.
- Light earthen diyas
Earthen diyas, tea lights and candles are kinder alternatives to electrically-powered decorative lamps and lanterns. They can be decorated in different ways to add a festive Diwali vibe to your home.
- Use Natural Colors for Rangoli
Diwali is incomplete without a rangoli! For an eco-friendly Diwali decoration, it is a good idea to use organic or herbal rangoli colors. Alternatively, you can use flower petals or leaves to make your Diwali.
You can also prepare Diwali colors by using some kitchen staples like white rice, turmeric, fennel, kumkum, and others for different colors.
- DIY Diwali Torans/Bandhanwars from old greeting cards!
Place it at the entrance of your house to welcome guests and set the perfect festive mood with a traditional touch.
Method:
• Reuse old greeting cards
• Cut the portion you want
• Glue them on a ribbon or a string
That’s it! Your colourful and vibrant toran is ready.
Alternatively, you can opt for mango and coconut leaves for making your very own Toran. Add marigold flowers to the toran to give it more color.
- Use plants for decoration
What could be more environment-friendly than placing indoor plants? Look for the plants that are easy to take care of and will not soil your work area or home. Plants like money plant, calathea, umbrella plants, etc. are ideal for apartments.
