7 must watch movies to celebrate diversity

With many resources available to understand diversity and educate others too, one of the best and most interesting ways is introducing movies that celebrate diversity. Thought provoking movies spark conversation that can bring about a change in mindset. Let’s dive into some of our favourites:
Moana
Moana the daughter of a Polynesian chief sails across the ocean and learns powerful lessons as she discovers her identity. This movie showcases a strong female lead from the Pacific Islands, a diverse setting that isn’t represented in many films.
Wonder
Auggie, the main character in Wonder (which is based on a book), was born with facial differences and is entering a mainstream school for the first time. Compassion, acceptance of differences and understanding that they just add more richness to our lives are some strong themes.
Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures is based on the incredible true story of three female mathematicians who dealt with many challenges around race and gender as they became an important part of NASA and the U.S. space program.
Wadja
Wadjda is the first Saudi Arabian movie to be directed by a woman, and it centers on a feisty, independent girl who wants to ride a bicycle, wear sneakers, and be able to compete against her best friend—a boy in the neighborhood.
The Theory of Everything
At age 21, Stephen Hawkings was diagnosed with a fatal disease – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – and gradually lost the use of his limbs. Brilliant film The Theory of Everything celebrates his life.
Ray
Driven by his enormous musical talents, Ray rose from humble beginnings in Flordia. He lost his sight at age 7 due to glaucoma – and realized his talent in music, went on to become one of the most successful, influential and beloved music artist of all time.
A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place is a post-apocalyptic, science-fiction horror film. This one is included in this list due to its central use of American Sign Language (ASL) as the primary form of communication among the characters in the movie.
