All of us at some point in life question our existence, our purpose and wonder about the powers that run this entire Universe. ‘Life of Pi’ is one of those brilliant movies that has had the power to influence this thinking and make us ponder over life’s poignant questions.
Here are a few lessons we learnt from this movie
Learn to co-exist
Pi had to make peace with the fact that he must co-exist with Richard Parker, the tiger. Alone in a boat in the middle of the ocean with a tiger was out of his comfort zone to say the least, but he was forced to try and develop a bond with him, set boundaries and co-exist- a skill very important whether it comes to work, family or even existing with nature and its bounty harmoniously.
It is all about perspective
Pi could have given up. He had lost a lot and whether or not he would survive was a huge question, but he chose to see the situation from a perspective of growth. And that itself turned his situation around.
Miracles happen, so keep believing
Life of Pi is a perfect example of not giving up even when conditions are harsh. It’s like what Churchill said, “When you’re going through hell, keep going.” No matter what storm he went through, or the fact that he was next to a predator, Pi still believed there was hope and that he would survive, so he did survive.
Stories teach us a lot
They are great at helping us cope with grief, pain, and through imagination we can find solutions to life’s toughest problems. They help us understand ourselves better. Sometimes stories are all we have.
Farewells and gratitude is important
“I suppose in the end the whole of life becomes an act of letting go. But what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye”, Irrfan Khan’s dialogue moved us. Life is transient. It keeps moving. Ends of something are beginnings of something else. We must take time to make peace with ends, to say our goodbyes, whether it is with people or situations and be thankful for life and everything it has given us. This is the essence of life.
Pi chose to surrender to the situation, not in a defeated way but to let it teach him whatever it has to. Eventually he thanks God for the lessons, the experience and what it shapes him into, thereby welcoming limitless possibilities into his life.
