Self-image, self-identity is the perception of one’s thinking about self. What we say and how we look at ourselves, shapes the respect we have for us, determines our personality, and frames our growth and success. It refers to a person’s self-conception, self-referent cognitions, or self-definition.
Importance of a positive self-image
- Boosts our confidence.
- We understand how to respond and not react to situations against us.
- We develop mental strength and become happy with what we are.
- We are able to gather awareness of the areas we need to learn and improve to grow in life.
- We become resilient to the critics, comments, and judgments of the world.
Steps to cultivate a positive self-identity image
Mindful change in the way you look at yourself
Nothing happens magically, there always is science behind accomplishing it. Cultivating a positive self-identity requires hammering each day to shape ourselves and become aware of our talks, behavior, and nature towards self and others. Mindfulness brings us to an awakening state of the mind.
Make a note of the positive qualities of self
Each one of us has different capabilities to perform a task, some good ones, and a few not-so-great ones. Focussing on our positive qualities enhances our confidence and boosts our mood.
Reward and compliment yourself on the smallest achievement of your life
Rewards are a sign of releasing stress, and negativity and encourage you to keep doing the path you have taken. Even the smallest compliment of appreciating self will lead to higher self-esteem and self-image.
Practice self-care, self-love, and have a cool approach towards situations around you
The more we handle things, situations and circumstances lightly, we get an edge in handling and Balancing our emotions. Self-care and self-love eliminate self-doubt and guilt and smoothly help us to reach a positive self-identity.
Set smaller goals each day
Everything has time to be explored and fulfilled. Big noticeable differences in self can be compressed into smaller goals to be achieved to highlight the awareness about self. Setting small targets eases the mind mentally to make things possible.
Observe, learn and take help from someone who has mastered it
In our daily lives, we find people who love what they do, a small or a big job, social work or a C- Level corporate job or they could even be a practitioner. Taking help is a gesture of strength and courage towards positivity.
Positive self-identity statements
- I understand my performance was not good in the past. However, I believe I will bring out the best in myself in the coming times.
Outcome – I do not stick with my past failures and rejections.
- My good character, values, humility, and personality surpasses the looks that I have.
Outcome – I do not lower my charm because of my appearance and I act as per my qualities.
- I am responsible and alert to my decisions, and choices taken in life and the outcome is not based on anything else.
Outcome– I do not fall into the trap of blaming and complaining about others.
If you believe in your version of yourself then you will not let any negative remark affect your self-identity. The benefits of understanding Self-Identity is that we get to explore and understand ourselves.
