Nestled in the hills, Dharamshala has been home to Captain (Dr) Rahul Vishnoi, a dental surgeon and former army officer, for over two years. Beyond his professional accolades, Rahul is a compulsive reader, a book blogger, an accomplished self-published author, and an enthusiastic traveler.
In the lap of the majestic Dhauladhar Range in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala exudes tranquility with its serene landscapes and spiritual ambiance. The town, divided into upper and lower regions, offers breathtaking views of lush greenery, snow-capped peaks, and Tibetan monasteries. Known as the residence of the Dalai Lama, Dharamshala carries a unique blend of Tibetan and Indian cultures, fostering an atmosphere of peaceful coexistence. The gentle sway of prayer flags, the resonating chants from monastic halls, and the crisp mountain air collectively contribute to Dharamshala’s tranquil charm, making it an idyllic retreat for seekers of serenity.
Rahul shares with us his journey living in the quaint place. Let’s take a look!
Dharamshala Calling
For Rahul, Dharamshala wasn’t a casual choice but a significant part of his journey. His initial posting in the army as a Captain in AD Corps led him to this serene city, and it has become his chosen abode since.
Transition and Challenges
Transitioning from the disciplined life of an army officer to civilian living posed unique challenges. Rahul reflects on the contrasting lifestyles, highlighting the structured yet cushy military life versus the flexible but demanding rhythm of life in the hills.
Engaging with the Community
Having moved out of the cantonment, Rahul has become a paying guest in a farmer’s home, offering a glimpse into the agrarian life of Himachal. He marvels at the hardworking women in the community, breaking gender norms with their involvement in various tasks.
Cultural Marvels
One aspect that captivates Rahul is the simplicity and inclusivity of Himachali weddings. Contrary to stereotypes, these weddings involve active participation from all family members. Although food (Dhaam served on leaves to people sitting down) is cooked by the cooks called ‘Boti’, all the males of the family get up in the morning and sit down to cut up the vegetables, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie.
The DJ plays Pahadi folk songs upon which people dance, twirling slowly and smiling at each other. Not even one fight broke out in the entire three day wedding I attended. Dowry is rare and people are mild mannered.
Personal Growth in the Hills
Living amidst a different landscape and lifestyle has contributed to Rahul’s personal growth. Trusting people more, respecting farmers, and embracing the simplicity of life are among the valuable lessons he has imbibed.
Message to the World
Rahul advocates for experiencing life in the hills to appreciate often overlooked resources and facilities. He emphasizes the absence of unnecessary conflicts, attributing it to the physical labour integral to survival in the hills.
In the tranquil embrace of Dharamshala, Captain (Dr) Rahul has discovered not just a place to reside but a canvas for personal transformation. His journey echoes the essence of community living, resilience, and a deeper connection with nature.
Dharamshala, with its picturesque landscapes and vibrant culture, continues to offer enriching experiences that unfold in the lap of the Himalayas and this story is an invitation to rediscover life’s simple yet profound joys.
