Social media- Whether you love it or hate it, you’re hooked to it or want a detox, it is still an easy and instant way to connect with the world. From getting traffic to your website, generating leads, reaching new people, or learning from fellow content creators it all works together to up your thought leadership game. We have the freedom of speech and liberty to post what we want on our accounts, but are there some untold etiquettes we most certainly must be following? We’ve shortlisted 5 topics you should talk about and 5 you shouldn’t on social media. Let’s dive in.
Definitely talk about
- Things that inspire you: If something inspires you, shouldn’t the world know about it too? What sparks your curiosity? What brings out your creativity? What helps you when you are faced with a writer’s/artist’s block? Did you come across a creator whose work you enjoy? Talk about all these things that make your journey easier.
- Social causes: Championing causes bring more purpose to whatever we create. It shows that we’re aware and conscious of what’s happening around and that we are determined to make a change.
- Hacks that make your life easier: Everyone loves a good listicle and a functional How-To post. We always run to Google when we are clueless about how to set up a tripod or what the best way to do a flat lay is. You have some hacks? Share them with your followers.
- Witty musings: Good humor and memes will never go out of style. Memes are in fact the modern day satire. Use your wit and tickle people’s funny bone. Some Work From Home banter, Monday Woes and Saturday Joys are definitely relatable content.
- Lifting others up: Like someone’s work? Or maybe you saw someone doing something courageous. Maybe someone talked about their mental health journey or about something they’re going through. It takes a lot of bravery to tell your story online. Be the person who uplifts and encourages them.
Definitely don’t do this on social media
- Posting content that is insensitive: Do your reading and educate yourself before you re-share/like/comment or even give your take on a topic. Social media may be a vast space but you can’t erase your footprints, so make sure you leave the kind of imprint you want to be seeing yourself.
- Ignoring comments: Well, you post content so people can engage on it. So it makes complete sense to engage back with them! Appreciate nice comments, start a conversation. Don’t respond to haters with hate, but choose your words wisely. Be friendly, but professional.
- Skipping editing process: Nobody likes to see typos, or carelessly written content. Double check, cross your t’s, dot your i’s and then hit publish.
- Posting only when you are inspired: If you’re trying to build a brand, an audience you’ve got to have a plan. People enjoy great content, but they enjoy it more when there is consistency. Knowing that a great video is coming up at 4 PM on Friday is so much more better than wondering when the next video will come/ or if it will ever come. Having a content calendar, an idea journal and a posting schedule helps.
- Putting up an impersonal front: People want to know who you are. Adding a personal touch to your content helps you with credibility and connects you to the audience. Relevant life updates, live sessions, etc., work wonders.
This isn’t an exhaustive list though. There’s so much more that you can explore and experiment on social media. Just remember to be kind, courteous and honest and shine at whatever you do.
