Id-e-Milad-un-Nabi is observed as the birthday of Islamic Prophet Muhammad. It is said that the first Muslim ruler to officially celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad was Muzaffar al-Din Gökböri. The Ottomans then declared it as an official holiday in 1588, known as Mevlid Kandil.
And no festival is complete without food to make memories around. Here are some foods you must try on Id-E-Milad:
1. Sheer Khurma
A dish from Persia, it translates to mean milk cooked with dates. It is made by cooking vermicelli, milk, dates and other dry fruits that are finely chopped. In the final stages of cooking, you can also add rose water. Eat chilled or warm, sheer khurma is sure to take you to paradise.
2. Mutton Biryani
Biryani should be declared as god’s food. A dish brought to us by Mughals, it is definitely one piece of history that we all love. Pair it with raita or a cold glass of lemonade and we guarantee all the stress of the day will melt away.
3. Baklava
Apparently Nov 17th is celebrated as Baklava day! Any food item that has its own day should be eaten and savoured – what say you? This flaky dessert filled with honey and nuts finds mentions as far back as 8th century BC. It has origins in Middle East, Asia and Europe. A truly international pastry, no?
4. Chicken Korma
Chicken breast marinated in dahi and cooked in coconut milk and variety of spices, this dish is easy to prepare and easier to eat! All you need is a willing cook who can do the cooking – because we’ll be more than willing to munch this down. *burp*
5. Shahi Tukda
They say eat a well balanced meal. We say this list with 3 desserts and 2 food items is definitely well balanced! A delicacy from the royal kitchen of Hyderabad, shahi tukda is a simple recipe but oh so foodgasmic. All you need is some toast and condensed milk and viola, it’s ready.
So what are you going to eat/order/cook today?
Eid mubarak!
