Have you ever wondered, why movies with a male as a protagonist are never called “Male Centric movies” whereas movies with any female taking center stage are always referred to as “Female centric movies”? This trend has been there in Indian cinema for decades now. Whenever we see a bold woman or any female character a little different from the usual norms, whose presence is not merely to add eye candy to the film and its promotions, people just tag them as “Female oriented movies”. What does it even mean? That the movie is only meant for women?
Tamil film industry has for sure evolved over the years, in terms of filmmaking, stories, music, characters, and whatnot. Lots of women actors have given excellent performances in the movies portraying strong, intelligent, and independent women, sometimes overshining the protagonist itself. Here are a few instances where women broke the stereotypes and gave a memorable performance, outshining the men with whom they shared screen space.
Mozhi
Archana, a character so unique and powerful that has become quite memorable even as many years have passed. She is both deaf and mute, works as a teacher, never being dependent on anyone. But that doesn’t make her a perfect woman. She has her fair set of insecurities, flaws, and fears yet doesn’t like others to sympathize with her. Jyothika’s portrayal of this strong, bold woman earned her a State Film award.
Aaranya Ghandam
Subbu, is quite an unusual character, to say the least. There are lots of women fighting openly, for their voices to be heard and treated as they deserve to be. Yet, there are few who take a different route in a man’s world. Subbu is the kind of woman who silently plays her cards well, by using an injustice done to her advantage. We always get to see characters either being good or bad but what happened to the in-between? Grey human being like Subbu is rare to come by. Pro tip: Watch out for the finale!
Taramani
Althea, a fiercely independent mother who is the breadwinner of her family. An individual who shoulders the judgment and questions by society, for something she is not at fault. She gracefully accepts her ex-husband’s sexuality and ignores the naysayers and moves forward by being exactly the way she is. She is a liberal and free-spirited woman who is very uncommon to be portrayed in films.
Aruvi
Aruvi, a rebel thrown out of her house after she is accused of bringing shame to her family. She is a strong woman who has overcome many challenges throughout her life yet is fun-loving and playful at times. Aruvi showcases a whole new level of feminism and questions the materialistic society and the men who molested her in quite unexpected way. This is definitely a once in a lifetime movie and a must-watch.
Iraivi
A movie dominated by powerful female characters who totally steal the show and take it a step ahead. These women who face difficulties due to the men in their lives, make an unusual choice of seeking personal happiness by handling the problems life has thrown at them. The three women characters are very well written and executed as they showcase raw qualities that resonates with everyone.
Soorarai Pottru
Bommi, aka Sundari is one of the best female characters in Tamil cinema as she is feisty and independent and supports her partner’s dream all the while fighting to achieve her own dreams. She has her own way of handling things and never backs up from any harsh situations thrown her way and fights for what she deems right. It’s great to see such refreshing characters who are so inspiring. She is the best example of “Women written by women”.
