You enter a world where culture urges you to adapt to your surroundings. Your cultural identity is derived from the community of your upbringing, shaped by family rituals, traditions, and customs. As you grow, your personal opinions take shape. Differences may arise when it comes to adhering to family traditions, as you might be drawn to alternative beliefs. Despite these individual nuances, the core influence of your upbringing lingers, subtly shaping your perspective.
Let’s see how many ways culture is responsible in defining you:
The love for food
You are introduced to a variety of food at home and from that also you make your personal choices like particular dal from all the dals made at home. Similarly, you may like a different cuisine, but your tongue likes a particular taste and that comes from the culture you are brought up in. If you are a vegetarian, you will be satisfied by the same at the end of the day after trying all sorts of different foods.
The same goes for non-vegetarians, vegans etc.
Culture inspires the clothes you wear
The clothing style is another aspect of culture responsible in defining you. For generations, this style has been passed on to you. With the change in time, you may see a few changes but again the core remains the same. An Indian can be determined from the style of clothes they wear, and this is true everywhere and for everyone.
The culture defines your initial clothing style.
The way you communicate
Like every state has a peculiar style of words, phrases and slang, every household also has a style of talking. Like you welcome guests in a way and you are different with your friends. Different gestures that you have watched your family practicing as you grew became a part of your interaction as well.
Lifestyle choices
In life, there are many crossroads, and you have you make a choice at the earliest. A choice that is good for you, may be for others as well but what influences your choice of decisions? The culture you are brought up in.
For e.g. If kindness runs in your family, then even if you have one piece of bread left with you and you see a beggar asking for food, within a second, you will give that piece of bread to the beggar. At many crossroads in life, you never wait for a second thought but take the decision.
The values or principles you live by
The core of a culture is shaped by its values, which are broad preferences for certain things like what’s considered good or bad. Many times, people might not even realize what values they have. These values can’t be easily talked about or seen directly by others. We can only figure out someone’s values by noticing how they act in different situations.
As you grow, you mix a little of the values of the place you live in and the company of people you are with but the core remains the same. That’s how culture defines you.
The intricate web of culture weaves its influence through various facets of our lives. From our culinary preferences to clothing styles, communication methods, and even the values we hold dear, every aspect is touched by the cultural tapestry in which we are raised.
As we navigate the crossroads of life, our choices are often guided by the values instilled in us by our cultural upbringing. Connecting with our culture is an ongoing process, sustained through active engagement in traditions, celebrations, and the preservation of familial and societal practices. It is through these intentional efforts that we foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural threads that shape our identity, contributing to the vibrant mosaic of human diversity.
