Science Fiction is a cool way to stretch our imagination far and wide. Sci-Fi is also a great way to tackle social issues such as climate change, war, and so much more. We’re always on the lookout for some nice sci-fi movies and we came across a few that we think are super underrated. Here goes:
ARQ
The oil supply has run dry, and corporations fight against nations for the world’s remaining energy supplies. A couple is trapped in a house and stuck in a time loop. They are also surrounded by a gang of mysterious masked intruders. An engineer (Robbie Amell) must protect a technology that could deliver unlimited energy and end the wars. A little confusing because of the time loop, but ARQ is a cool movie to watch.
Orbiter 9
A space love story. That too a Spanish one. A young woman has lived in a spaceship all her life, or is it a spaceship? She falls in love with the first human she meets, an engineer who comes to fix the oxygen supply where she lives. There’s a lot hidden from her and the reality is far from what she thinks it to be.
The Adam Project
After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self and his father for a mission to save the future. It is far from the genre classic, but a fun and light watch for sure to enjoy with your family.
Don’t Look Up
Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. Don’t Look Up isn’t about ordinary people who discover inside them the heroism to save the ones they love. It’s about ordinary people who know what’s coming and ultimately aren’t heroes at all. The movie as Di Caprio says uses the metaphor of an impending world-killing comet to describe the reaction of the public, scientists and policy-makers to climate change.
Love and Monsters
Forced to live underground after an apocalypse, a boy decides to venture out of his colony in order to reunite with his girlfriend. It is not a classic love story and will leave you laughing and crying at the same time. A heartwarming tale, Love and Monsters is an epic adventure movie and the epic part of it is not about fighting monsters and winning the love of your life. Watch to know more!
Awake
Global hysteria ensues after a mysterious catastrophe wipes out all electronics and takes away humanity’s ability to sleep. Scientists race against the clock to find a cure for the unexplained insomnia before its fatal effects eliminate the human race. Not being able to sleep could mean so much work gets done? Well, not really. Too much of anything has its bad effects. Of course, there is one little girl who is unaffected by the catastrophe. Perhaps she has the cure for it all.
IO
In a post-apocalyptic time, the earth has been rendered toxic, and most of humanity has abandoned the planet and colonised one of Jupiter’s moons, IO. But young scientist Sam Walden has stayed behind and dedicated herself to finding a way for human beings to survive on Earth. It is a heart wrenching lyrical story of the slow decay of earth, loneliness and hope.
Oxygen
A woman wakes up in a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she got there, and she must find a way out before running out of air. This French movie is set inside a cryogenic chamber, but believe us, it is anything but boring. It will have you on the edge of your seats as you wait for the protagonist to find a way to escape, and discover dark secrets as the movie progresses.
