World Health Organisation
Who we are
Founded in 1948, WHO is the United Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to promote health. Their motto is to keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable. So that everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
Between 30% and 50% of cancer deaths can be prevented by modifying or avoiding key risk factors. This also includes implementing existing evidence-based prevention strategies. The cancer burden can also be reduced through early detection of cancer and management of patients who develop cancer. Prevention also offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer.
Treatment options include surgery, cancer medicines and/or radiotherapy, administered alone or in combination. A multidisciplinary team of cancer professionals recommends the best possible treatment plan. These are based on tumour type, cancer stage, clinical and other factors. The choice of treatment should be informed by patients’ preferences and consider the capacity of the health system.
Union for International Cancer Control
They unite and support the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden and to promote greater equity. Their mission is to ensure that cancer control continues to be a priority in the world health and development agenda. The UICC’s rapidly increasing membership base of over 1200 organisations in 172 countries, represents the world’s major cancer societies, ministries of health and patient groups and includes influential policymakers, researchers and experts in cancer prevention and control. UICC also boasts more than 50 strategic partners.
The 3 pillars of this foundation are:
