There is a constant debate going on about whether oats are healthy or not. Whichever side wins, it is evident that the popularity of oats has been on increase over the past decade or so. If it was that bad sure, why would it be deemed as a “healthy food” in the first place? There are pros and cons even when it comes to food. People are more conscious than ever about the food they consume and the calories that go down with it.
The art of healthy living is a concept that has become very familiar to many people across the world. That’s why everyone is trying to be mindful of what they include in their diet.
The case of Superfood
Back in the day, people would not visit their nutritionists as much as we do today. They didn’t see the need for it. But in this age and era, even though technology has advanced so are the types of diseases. There is no need to mention the pandemic that toppled the world upside down for more than a year. So, everyone is fighting to live a healthy lifestyle, investing money and time by incorporating a lot of changes. Because what’s the point of earning millions but being not able to enjoy it?
Superfoods came into the picture as people started being ever so interested in their health and well-being. We would have heard health experts and nutritionists mention superfoods while talking about healthy eating. Oats are a popular superfood, that every health and fitness enthusiast swears by. On the contrary, there are people who don’t tag it under the ‘not-so-healthy’ category. Here the fault lies in the type of oats you choose not the oats itself.
Where it went wrong?
One can never argue that oats is unhealthy on the whole. But we can’t ignore the dark side of the food industry that tricks us into buying unhealthy food. The problem here with consuming oats is the same. Instant oats are the most highly processed variety. And we all are attracted to the different flavors and variety of oats that are available in the market.
With gazillion choices available we are totally clueless as to which one to pick and end up taking the one with “100% organic” or “natural” tags written on the cover. But that is definitely not the case. That’s why it’s important to take a look at the ingredients list. Most of them contain artificial flavors, taste enhancers, and colors.
So next time you choose the “masala” or “veggies” flavor consider your choices. Fickar not! You can buy plain unsweetened oats and add flavors as per your preference at home. This way you can insure all the ingredients are safe.
Let’s talk about the benefits
Oats are whole-grain food, commonly eaten for breakfast as oatmeal, made by boiling oats in water or milk. Oatmeal is often referred to as porridge. It is loaded with dietary fiber – more than many other grains- and has a range of healthy cholesterol-lowering properties. It is also a good source of high-quality protein, with a good balance of essential amino acids making it a well-balanced food.
Apart from its health benefits like improving blood sugar control and lowering the risk of colorectal cancer and blood pressure, it’s best for people who are in the process of weight loss. Even though it’s a carb-rich choice and the fact that it can’t pull off magic to make anyone lose weight just like that it could be a valuable addition to the weight loss journey.
Anyone can enjoy a hot bowl of oats with their favorite toppings anytime anywhere. Nowadays it has been added to the go-to breakfast club.
