Mental health is often talked about everywhere but what does it mean exactly? People shy away from accepting that they may also be a victim of mental health disorder. Mental health is a combination of emotional, psychological and social well being. It affects how we think, feel and act. That’s why it is necessary to maintain positive mental health.
Your body is responsible for positive mental health
Your physical appearance affects you mentally. You may not crave a perfectly shaped body but a healthy and active body is the one that keeps you happy. Exercise regularly that energise you for the day. A simple 20 mins nature walk helps calm your senses and you feel relaxed.
Eat good home-cooked food that’s balanced. Every vitamin and protein add nutrition to your body in some form. These are responsible for giving fuel to your body so that you perform your daily tasks easily. If your plate is incomplete, it affects your mood. You feel hungry and angry at the same time and may grab something that’s high in cholesterol and fats.
A good amount of sleep is very important that keeps you active all day. Don’t you feel irritated on the days you have so much work and you are feeling sleepy? Lack of quality sleep may make you depressed in the long run.
Circle of positive people
You are what you listen, hear and see. The more you are in the company of positive people, the more you are likely to have positive mental health. It’s better to avoid negative people who are always complaining about something or the other. You may try not to indulge with them but if you meet them regularly, you ought to get some of their negative habits unknowingly.
Quieten your mind
Practice meditating or join a mindfulness class. Even half an hour of sitting quietly helps you shut your ears, eyes and mind from the outside world and be calm. This improves your power of concentration and you are able to perform better on a daily basis.
Learning a new skill
Learning something new keeps your creative juices in the right flow. You are busy doing a new activity and learning is always helpful in life, today or maybe later. When you enjoy your work, you feel happy. You don’t get time to indulge in negative things happening around you.
Developing coping skills
Nobody remains happy forever and sadness is bound to hit you at some point in time. Now is the time to fight it back instead of feeling depressed and negative. Learn to accept situations and people. They will not change for you so you have to adjust yourself because you want to be happy. Let them be as they are but it’s important that you take care of your mental health.
Practice gratitude
Saying thank you at the end of the day for all you have is the best habit you should continue with. All life people compare themselves with peers or make a to-do list and run after unrealistic goals. Life is much more than luxuries and presents. Be thankful for things you have at present and give you happiness. You may practice writing thank you for one thing at a time every day.
