Human beings are addressed as emotional creatures. Emotions drive our thinking, working, and living pattern.
They are essential as a human’s life is based on emotions. Broadly, there are 34000 emotions in all. Our emotions are connected with each other.
What are emotions?
Emotions are a combination and result of the happenings in our lives.
Our decisions are influenced by the emotions we get.
- The feeling of sadness and happiness of an event –
It directs our day in terms of mood.
- The thoughts from fear, anxiety, satisfaction, and excitement from the occurrence of an event –
This either restricts or permits us to move ahead in life.
- The experience of fulfilment in the form of pleasure, and gratitude –
Helps us to believe, trust and love.
Are emotions good or bad?
Each emotion has a crucial role in our lives. All emotions that we encounter are required. Emotions are neither good nor bad. They are felt by us. It is absolutely fine to have them within us. There is no need to suppress our emotions.
Action and Reaction to emotions
The immediate response from an event may or may not be in our control.
For instance: If we fall while walking on a street, the feeling of pain and the watery eyes are not in our control.
However, a long-term response can definitely be taken into our control.
- The deep-rooted impact of the event –
Holding on to the emotion of grief, pain, and helplessness while playing the blame game versus letting go of the emotion by understanding that ups and downs, changes in phases and seasons are constant. This energizes us not to flow with the emotion and emerge out of it.
- Align with the present time and focus on reality-
This is essentially important in happy moments. Wrong decisions and wrong words are many a time uttered in extreme emotional behaviour.
We, as humans certain times get fooled easily when someone boosts or praises us and gets their work done. Frauds take place when a lucrative deal is offered.
Excitement is good and healthy but over-excitement is not good. It shatters our thinking pattern.
Being in alignment with the present time helps us take charge of reality.
- Acknowledge the natural responses from the event-
Emotions flow out naturally. A loud belly laugh, a good cry, and a longing desire is all obvious in certain circumstances.
Emotions are linked with each other and each emotion has its purpose.
Ex: As desires and aspirations are required for a Kickstart of our dreams, the attached string of fear comes along with those desires. The emotion of fear is vital too as with little fear, we become alert and work harder for the desires we look for. Both emotions have their role play. Acknowledging each of them is wisdom.
- The power to rearrange the thoughts is with us –
Our mind is very powerful. It can cook stories that may not be true. Getting stuck in a bad emotion or getting overjoyed in a happy emotion can alter the story. However, with patience, time, and practice the thoughts that trigger the emotion and create an imbalance can be rearranged. Practicing Mindfulness and being aware to reframe our emotions can help us unwind the trap from them.
An overview
Emotions have numerous benefits in our lives. And being emotional is what connects us to our relationships, reconnects us to real life, and saves us from danger. But releasing ourselves from disturbing emotions is completely our effort that is practically possible.
