Diets are usually for people who are looking for ways to lose weight over the short term. It’s really rare to see a person following the same diet for the longest time. People tend to try out all the new diet trends that season but never stick with one long enough to make it a habit. For a newbie, who wants to shed a few kilos, given zillion choices, it would be quite difficult to pick one. And the bare truth is no one diet will work for all. The process of finding what works for one’s body takes time and patience which people these days lack the most. People want instant results or nothing.
If you are confused about where to begin, here are some popular diet trends to pick from based on your requirements.
Intermittent fasting
Many religions have incorporated different fasting rituals over the years. Intermittent fasting focuses on intaking all the calories you need for the day in a limited time frame while fasting at regular intervals. Most people prefer a six or eight-hour window. It is all about when you eat, not what you eat. For all the foodies looking for a diet where you have absolutely no restrictions on your food intake, you can consider Intermittent fasting. But that doesn’t mean you can consume junk, definitely a big no. People can consume water or unsweetened drinks during their fast state to keep them hydrated.
It is good for people with chronic diseases or obesity. A huge nay for people who are having an eating disorder or are at risk of developing one.
Mediterranean diet
Did you know that the Mediterranean diet was named the best overall diet in 2020 for the fourth consecutive year? So, why hesitate? Give this a try. It is quite simple, you just have to limit your sweet, red meat, poultry, and dairy products by including lots of green produce, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and olive oils in the meals. This could be the best lifestyle change with a sustainable eating plan. It also helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases but could lead to Vitamin D deficiency if you don’t supplement when you cut back on dairy.
Paleo diet
Going Paleo again. Want to try living in the paleolithic era and eat as our caveman ancestors did? If you are concerned that all the processed food these days is leading to modern health problems, then this is the one for you. The Paleo diet focuses on consuming vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, and lean meats. It bans anything that requires industrialized farming techniques such as wheat, whole grains, sugar, dairy, and other processed foods. As it is highly restrictive, the longevity of following the diet is difficult. So, this could be a great option for someone with a short-term weight loss goal. In the Paleo world, you can start by experimenting with fire.
Vegan diet
The Plant powered trend restricts one from consuming anything that is not plant-based food by totally cutting down on all kinds of animal-based produces. Most people prefer this diet for ethical reasons and the greater good of the planet as plants have a much lower carbon footprint. It is high in fiber and low in cholesterol which is good for people with heart disease and obesity. But the downside is by eliminating all animal products one can develop nutrition deficiency. If you are worried about the snacking options there is no need to fret because even Oreos are vegan!
DASH diet
DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, emphasizing on restricting calories by avoiding sugar, salt, processed foods, alcohol. This hugely impacts a person’s daily calorie intake. Thus, it is best suited for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, and also for someone trying to lose weight. In just a few weeks, the DASH diet has been shown to lower blood pressure. As foods are not completely off-limits, this plan can be adapted by people with any culture or lifestyle.
The list doesn’t end here. You have a multitude of options to select from. So, start by figuring out your individual weight loss goals and lifestyle changes you want to make and nutrition priorities by consulting with your doctor
