Hitting the snooze button several times before we finally drag ourselves out of bed, rush through the morning, barely grab something for breakfast, and because the morning went by in a haze, letting the rest of the day become tedious, and then crashing into a restless sleep after binging on Netflix- only to repeat the same the next day does not sound like a good plan when we read it like this. But we’re all guilty of having lived through this kind of lifestyle. Not having a plan, a day to look forward to results in less to no productivity, poor mental and physical health and overall lethargy.
It goes without saying that having a routine is one of the best ways to have a good day
Now, many of us may feel that we already have a busy life, or a productive one. Maybe we are in a profession that forces us to work at odd or unexpected hours and having a set routine daily may not work for us.
But think of it this way- A healthy routine now ensures a healthy future. And a healthy future is how you can see the fruits of your hard work. Daily habits can be an indicator of increased productivity because we have data on how the day went, how much we got done and what more we can do to achieve more.
Your morning sets the tone for the day
How we begin our day says a lot about how the rest of the day will go. Hence a morning routine is vital. Creating a morning routine is not focused on how many checkboxes you can tick off and how quickly. Instead, it is about allowing yourself to begin your day with confidence, peace, and a positive attitude. Something as simple as making your bed after waking up, having some quiet time away from gadgets, journaling, planning the day, spending time with nature and family can help greatly.
Starting the day early with a growth mindset helps us get through the rest of the day with enthusiasm. How? Little achievements that we accomplish in the morning encourage us to push forward. Your morning routine could include anything from meditation to going to the gym or for a jog, prepping some great meals or reading something that inspires you. You could even read up on the routines of successful people and tweak them to suit your lifestyle. Ryan Holiday, one of the best speakers on productivity talks about his routine that helps him get so much done. Have a look.
Throw in fun elements through the day
A routine does not mean to have a monotonous day. If you’re someone who dreads Mondays, plan something fun on a Monday, like say a lunch with a friend, or a brief outing at the end of the day after work/school/college. You could even enroll for a hobby class you’ve been dying to take up. The key is to plan your day in such a way that you have something exciting to look forward to.
Why it is important to review your day
At the end of everyday, take a look at your To-Do list (we recommend you have one if you don’t), reflect on the tasks you took up and what you didn’t get to. Be honest about the importance of certain tasks. Were the tasks you put off crucial? Were some other tasks not so important? Asking such questions will help you get to the bottom of what needs to change.
Reviewing your day with intent allows you to maintain control over your schedule rather than your schedule controlling you.
