If you are the person who has set ‘Write a Book’ as your 2022 goal to be met, then prepare to reach it with fewer frustration and greater purpose. A book is more than the actual writing, in fact, it is a lot of visioning, planning and rewriting.
Here are a few things that you should know, if you are planning to write a book this year.
Know Who is Going to Read Your Book
It’s easier to understand your audience when you are writing a non-fiction book. For example, a cook book is for people who are enthusiastic about cooking, right? Right, except that you need to be even more specific. Is your book for beginners, veterans or those looking for entertainment and stories along with recipes? If your book is fiction, understand the main genre. Having a very clear idea of who is most likely to read your book will help you stay on track in terms of content.
Fulfil the Expectations of Your Reader
Whether fiction or non-fiction, a book of a certain genre does need to fulfil the criteria, or cover at least a few tropes / themes of that category. A photography book must cover basic techniques of clicking a great picture; a romance novel must have love interests and explore some of the common themes and so on. You can of course, experiment and go beyond what is usually offered but covering the basics is crucial for audience satisfaction.
Be Prepared to Write, Edit, Rewrite
Writers with many books under their belt also go through multiple drafts, stringent editing, and rewriting. You are not inept if your first attempt is not good enough. Polishing is an integral part of book writing. Also, have beta readers around who can help you spot plot holes or incoherence in your writing. Making use of a professional editor is also a very good way to turn out good writing.
Go for the Long Route
If you are someone who loves to write and practice the craft for the pleasure of it, you have many ways to improve. It may be a long journey but every win will be worth it. A well-received first book is a dream for all writers but you have to constantly improve the way you write to keep your reader’s interest. This is equally true whether you are writing persuasive non-fiction or a series of fantasy novels.
So, sift through your book ideas, find a plot in your premise and get from brainstorming to writing mode armed with these pointers.
