India has such magnificent richness in food, be it recipes, vegetables, fruits, food products, etc. And because of its diversity, the varieties are endless. Food is something that we are passionate about and that connects us. Even international products or products from different cities- we connect with them worldwide- especially fruits.
You know the saying, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. These days we have unlimited options in fruits, and most of them are fancy and, an average household consumes a certain amount of fruit every week.
So, how do we decide whether these fruits are even worth the hype or not? Well, here are some fancy fruits that are worth it and some that just don’t have it.
Kiwi
YAY! Kiwi is wildly famous in India for it’s rich flavor and health benefits. They were originated from China and have been sold in Indian Households now for a long time. Kiwi is a citrus fruit, highly rich in nutrients and low in calories. Kiwis are usually a little costly but because of their benefits, we can let it slide. They can be used in juices, cosmetics, cakes and it is advised by doctors to consume kiwis when we feel feverish because of the rich nutrients. Kiwis help in preventing various conditions and well, they are mouth-watering in taste.
Strawberry
MEH! Strawberries don’t need introduction, as they are very famous all around the world and are being consumed a lot too, but are they worth the hype? Well, if we categorize strawberry by its taste, it is very mediocre. Strawberries originated in France. They are costly and can be underwhelming. They do have health benefits and help in various conditions but the disadvantage is that they are contaminated with pesticides. The EWG (Environmental Working Group) makes a list of food that has highest level of pesticides and, strawberries somehow rises high up on the list. It is suggested for people to buy only organic strawberries.
Blueberry
YAY! Blueberries are famous worldwide for their sweet taste and multiple uses. They are an exotic fruit in India and originated in North America. They are wildly consumed during summers and are high in nutrients. They can be used in various recipes and can be purchased frozen. They can help in preventing high blood pressure, maintaining bone structure and improving mental health. They are rich in vitamins and as for the taste, oh! they are delicious and sweet.
Dragon fruit
MEH! Dragon Fruits grow on the Hylocereus cactus, also known as the Honolulu queen, whose flowers only open at night. They originated in America but are now cultivated in India as well. They are highly expensive and slightly sweet in taste but then again, they are so mild that you could say they’re kind of tasteless. They have their benefits but can also cause stomach issues, hypotension and adverse allergic reactions. People are somehow allergic to this fruit without knowing it.
Alphonso mango
YAY! Alphonso mangoes are a seasonal Fruit available from mid-April to June in India. They are famous all over India and have a rich taste. They can be used in shakes, ice-creams and we use it in pickles as well but the most loved way to eat them is simply as a fruit. They are nutritious and can be bought in bulk. The best Alphonso mangoes are exported from Devgad and are impeccable in taste.
Passion fruit
MEH! Passion Fruits are native from South America and are available in yellow, purple, red and green. Passion fruits are high in nutrition but they can be highly allergic for some people. The proteins of the fruit are from latex proteins that can be harmful. They taste ordinary, mediocre even and are expensive for an average household.
