6 Markets in Delhi that you wouldn’t want to miss (and you shouldn’t)
Delhi has always been energetic with it’s ‘Dil waalon ki Dilli’ and the people will always have that sense of non-stop enthusiasm. The streets speak for themselves, the people of Delhi roam around the city with bags full of hope and eyes searching. In this search, people look for things to buy, make life better, more fun and, what better way to collect those if not from Delhi itself? Well, the answer is within Delhi and the magnificent, beautiful markets.
The city has numerous markets and it would be a pity if we don’t visit them and drink in all that energy. So, let’s take a look at some of the markets and maybe, no, definitely visit them.
Lajpat Nagar (Central Market)
The fast-paced and hectic market in South Delhi, provides us a glimpse of the energetic Delhi. It is one of the most affordable markets that include most of the things an average middle class Indian shopper may need. It offers variety of products within the price range and of quality, as well. It is famous for its reasonably priced kurtis and salwar suits and, remember to bargain. The market has all kinds of Indian clothing with trendy bags, shoes, accessories and last but not the least, home furnishings as well. And a little tip, while you visit there, do check the beautiful jhumkis and Dolma Aunty ke momos.
Meena Bazaar
During the 17th century, the place within the lines of Red Fort used to keep the exclusive royal tailors and now that place is known as the historic market of Delhi, Meena Bazaar. It has been exclusively visited by tourists but with the recent work done around the place, the Mughal Look that had been lost somewhere the ruins of Delhi has been restored. The Bazaar, situated in Old Delhi, offers jewelry and handicrafts from across India.
Chandini Chowk
The most famous market of Delhi, represented in media and talked about in houses which needs no introduction either, our beloved Chandini Chowk. Walking through the narrow lanes of the place with specific shops on every corner, from clothes to jewelry, spices to electronics offers an adventurous. For Fabrics head to Katra Neel, for electronics head to Bhagirath Palace, for jewelry head to Dariba Kalan and for Asia’s finest spices head to Khari Baoli Road. And with that you get yourself varieties of essentials through just one place and if you get hungry, have some Paranthas from the infamous Paranthe wali gali.
Sundar Nagar
Now, Sundar Nagar is a market situated near Connaught Place for the rich and elite group of people as it attracts their love for art and antiques. They have some attractive and wonderful shops. If you are an enthusiast of Tea, do visit the Asia Tea House and Mittal House. If you are sucker of Silver jewelry, textiles, art and antiques, you wouldn’t want to not visit this place. And later, you can visit the zoo as well.
Janpat Market
Janpath Market has something for everyone for every occasion or we could say it is Janhit mein Jaari, this was a good one. You will find all kinds of goods, from every day to occasional and the shops look beautiful but do not forget to bargain, you are going to need that. The market is situated in Connaught Place with as mentioned above, all kinds of products, be it clothing, handicrafts, paintings, brassware, cheap jewelry, Indian Artifacts, leather work, fragrances, etc. And if that’s not enough, you will also find a little Tibet there, with Tibetan handicrafts and jewelry. All in all, do visit Janpath for an amazing experience.
Sunday Second-Hand Books Market
To all the book-lovers, bibliophiles, this market is for you. The market has all kinds of genres with thousands of both new and second-hand books available in cheap prices. Hunt around the market and you can find first editions of famous literary pieces as well, of quality. Well, in my case I found newest copy of ‘Persuasion’ by Jane Austen from there. So, pay a visit strictly on Sundays for all kinds of books, nearby Mahila Haat ground around Delhi Gate metro station.
Moreover, there’s always more to Delhi but among the streets, do remember to go to these markets for the generous dilli wale wouldn’t want to miss the fun and adventure associated with it.
