For someone who is starting out, it might be difficult to pick between Fiction or Non-Fiction. It is really a hard choice to make, be it for a novice or even a veteran for that matter. Even though the difference between fiction and non-fiction according to the definition are considered to be poles apart, the truth is sometimes, these lines are blurred, as the two often intersect.
If one starts a debate on which one is better, everyone is going to lose at last because it is reading, that matters, right? Ultimately whatever stuff you read, if it is good, it’s going to leave an impact on you.
During our last discussion with our community, here is what people had to say about the debate on which is better. Fiction or Non-fiction.
Now, Let’s dig deeper and examine what sets them apart.
CASE 1: FICTION
Researches suggest reading fiction helps people develop empathy, moral reasoning, and social cognition. But is it truly the only reason for people to get addicted to this world, hell no! It provides a great means of escape for most people from the reality of their lives and offers them the comfort that they seek. Some people find reading fiction a total waste of time. But hey, one doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. Where is fun in that? And also, who will pass a free ticket of experiencing all the adventures and rollercoasters of emotions without even having to sweat it?
Once you encounter the best writing in the world out there, then there is no going back. The way we get immersed into their world and totally fall for people who are only fictionally alive is the beauty of these stories. However, at one point they make us wonder if our life is too short to catch up with all the wonderful works out there.
Some interesting viewpoints about fiction having the power to make people more empathetic.
CASE 2: NON-FICTION
A piece of writing that is strictly about information and facts on true events. Even the person who hates reading non-fiction consumes such content on daily basis just in a different mode like newspapers, television, etc. Furthermore, there are few non-fiction works that make use of techniques followed in fiction to make it more appealing to the readers. One may connect with the story but can’t expect to get “lost” as in the case of fictional stories.
But that doesn’t mean, it has less to offer. Definitely not. Reading them will help you know more about the functioning of the world, secrets behind the masterminds, and help improve your analytical and logical thinking. Whatever genre you are interested in, there are always plenty for you to choose from.
Hold on! Check out some fascinating opinions of people about non-fiction having no personality and leaving less room for imagination.
WHICH IS BETTER?
The hard truth being said, there is no better option at all. It’s all about personal preferences. No one is exactly at fault for reading what they like. If you pick up one and miss the other, it’s not good. But as a novice, start with something that interests you. Build the habit of reading and slowly expand your horizon. The world of books is definitely a beautiful place to be. Once you get into it, there is no returning back.
By reading books, one opens infinite doors to world of endless possibilities that they never knew existed.
Happy reading!
The World belongs to those who read.
