Leading a healthy and satisfying life cannot be complete without some amount of social interaction. Becoming socially conscious is necessary for us to have meaningful interactions with not just people but situations and causes around us. Here are a few easy ways we can become more socially conscious:
Stay updated
Whether it is via credible sources of information or news, it is important to stay updated. We must know what is happening around the world we live in to form an opinion or take a stand for something.
Pay attention to the community around you
In our own locality, the society or place we live in there will surely be several issues that need addressing. Talk to people around, your domestic workers, the neighbours, hear what they have to say and something will get your attention. If you find a couple of other people who feel the same about a certain concern, it is an opportunity to bring your heads together for some action plan.
Act on smaller scales, but act
Once you know some of the issues around and something tugs at your heartstrings, it might get overwhelming. You might wonder what you can do as an individual. But instead of choosing inaction, small simple acts can be effective too. It always begin with the first step, right? There are numerous ways to make a difference online and offline and become socially conscious.
Find examples of good practice
While we keep ourselves updated on the news, it is often very grave and intense. That can make it hard for us to believe that there is hope left. It can also be misleading making us feel like there’s no solution to the serious issues such as war, environmental crises, poverty and so on. But when you go a little deeper in your research you will definitely find people who have taken initiatives and made a change, you will find stories of goodness and hope, you may even be able to join hands and support such an initiative or get started on something of your own.
Think before you speak
This goes without saying whether it is online or offline, we do not know everything. That is why it is important to get our facts straight and respond without a bias. Bias does not contribute to an inclusive society. We all come from different places, and have gone through different experiences in life. It is important that we choose our words with care, use inclusive language and not promote any kind of bullying or hate speech.
Choose your circle wisely
We grow when we associate with people who are moving in the direction we want to. Having a circle of friends who are socially conscious too will keep you motivated, aware and with a healthy mindset. Motivational speaker Jim Roth once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Positivity rubs off on people and you can influence the world before you know it!
Take care of yourself
Take care of your mental health. Social consciousness is possible only when we ourselves are conscious of our health. When we understand ourself we understand others around us better. When you are filled with positive energy you can give positive energy to the world!
