How to Keep Your New Year Resolutions

Habits are the cornerstone of change and a new year often feels like a fresh start and a good opportunity to alter the bad habits and catch up on new ones. Well-thought out habits serve you and help you grow psychologically, emotionally, socially, physically, or intellectually. But the problem is that resolutions are much easier to make than to keep. By the end of March or even earlier, many of us have abandoned our resolve and settled back into our old routines. A study says that 23% of people quit working on their resolution just two weeks into the new year. Only 19% of people continue to stick to their goals over a longer time. Here are a few things you can follow to keep up with your resolution.
Practical Planning
Don’t make plans in a hurry. Make a proper plan before initiating and outlining. New Year’s resolutions should be planned well before December 31 arrives, not in a hurry. Outline and do it accordingly. Also make a list of how to resist temptation, how to deal with them and overcome them. You can also include a friend or assistant who can accompany you and keep you motivated.
Talk About Your Resolutions
The more you talk about them, the more serious you become. Don’t keep your resolution a secret, rather speak it out. When others are aware you will become more serious and your wish will support you to carry it forward. This will help you motivate yourself and keep you going throughout the plan.
Track and Reward
Always keep a track of your new habits. Make sure to set small goals and slowly reach each step. Note down your weekly or fortnightly plans in a journal to make things easier for you. After attaining the small goals, reward yourself with little things. This will help you keep going and motivate you. This does not mean going out of the way and breaking the resolution but rather just energizing you to do things.
Keep at It
It’s not easy to continue the resolution but not impossible too. Even if you don’t feel like continuing, try a little harder. If the cycle breaks in between, make sure you start it again. Do not get demotivated with the discontinuity, rather restart it.
Stay Realistic
Do not make unattainable goals. Make small goals and attain them slowly. No one can build Rome in a day, it requires time and patience. Hold on to your patience and keep on going to attain little goals every day.
With these tricks under your belt, you can be assured of continuing with the resolution, no matter what it is.
