Finding homes for abandoned strays for the past 17 years- Coimbatore’s Human-Animal Society
India has over 80 million homeless animals that are found on our streets.
Every day we come across lots of stray animals in our society suffering to get even a single meal. These animals are helpless, finding it difficult to navigate through each day without getting hurt and having no one to take care of them.
They are desperately dependable on us humans.
Even though there are lots of NGOs and animal shelters still the number of homeless strays is countless. They have a risk of spreading diseases, territorial fights, and chances of them getting into an accident or causing an accident are high. In the worst case, it might lead to a lot of painful deaths for animals as well as humans.
For all of you wondering what we could do for these voiceless souls, there are aplenty of ways you can help.
For starters, you could feed them and volunteer at NGOs near you. That brings us to a beautiful sanctuary and their story worth sharing.
A beautiful sanctuary- Human Animal Society
One such NGO, that is laser-focused on helping these voiceless animals by undertaking and making a difference in their lives is Human Animal Society, located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
A humble abode for all the fur buddies to come together in one place and call their home, where warm food is served and lots of love is spread, really something that every living creature wants to be blessed with. And that is exactly what makes HAS special. The love between the people and their furry friends.
This non-profit trust was established in 2006, under the Indian Trust Act to address the welfare of stray animals in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. And their rescue center, set on 1.25 acres of land in Seeranaickenpalayam is a central hub of constant buzz. Up until now, they have touched more than 70,00 lives for the past 17 years.
So, what was the idea behind starting HAS?
“To have a common platform where anyone interested in animal welfare can join hands and work together to make a difference in the lives of sick, abandoned, and injured animals,” says Dr. Vasudevan.
What do they do?
“We rescue and treat injured stray animals, sterilize them, conduct ABC (Animal Birth Control) programs, and anti-rabies vaccine drives through ambulances in and around the city, hold adoption camps, feed them, and find their forever homes. And currently have two permanent veterinary doctors and two part-time consultant veterinary doctors who are on standby during any emergencies,” adds Dr. Vasudevan.
It is heartbreaking as she recalls the story behind every rescue,
“We treat and heal them to the extent that’s possible. Those that can be released back would be released in their territory and those that can be adopted or fostered will be actively promoted using social media promotions. Some of them that cannot be healed or are suffering would be humanely euthanized and some may pass away despite our efforts.”
A very much welcomed change
We asked if they saw any change in society after being in the field for more than a decade and a half.
“Absolutely, a lot of changes have happened and are continuing to happen,” says Dr. Vasudevan and further adds that they still have a long way to go. We should also constantly try influencing and changing mindsets of the people and create awareness with the help of online communities as much as we can.
Hats off to all the initiatives that they have taken over the years. It has definitely inspired many to join hands with them and help the voiceless in every way possible.
