Indian Air Force day is celebrated every year on 8th October. Officially established in 1932, the first aircraft came into being in 1933.
Though it has different crests for different squadrons, the frame of the crest remains standard. A source of inspiration and encouragement, the crest and motto of the crest are based on the role of the information.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, let’s look at content you can consume to understand the Air Force better:
Extreme Flight: Indian Air Force
A documentary by National Geographic and IAF, Extreme Flight was released on Republic Day in 2019 as a tribute to the heroic warriors of the Indian Air Force. It captures the challenges that IAF faces while operating in the country’s most hostile environments and weather conditions of the Himalayas. You can watch this 43 minute documentary on Hotstar.
Gunjan Saxena: The First Kargil Girl
This biopic is based on flight lieutenant Gunjan Saxena, the first Indian Air Force woman officer who went to war. Flying a Cheetah aircraft, she made history during the Kargil war in 1999 when she rescued several soldiers. You can watch the movie on Netflix.
Vijeta (1982)
A beautiful coming of age movie, Vijeta follows Angad, a confused teen, who decides to become a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force. Unlike other war movies, there is little time spent on the actual war. More time is spent on what the characters, especially Angad, are feeling about going to war and killing innocent people.
Veer-Zaara
A cross-border romance, the story follows Veer Pratap Singh, Squadron Leader in the Indian Air Force, and how he rescues Zaara, who is stranded following a bus accident. The story unfolds over a period of 22 years and is the perfect Bollywood romance to watch tucked away with your loved ones. You can watch the movie on Prime Video.
Hindustan ki Kasam (1973)
A movie based on Operation Cactus Lilly in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, it used authentic aircrafts like MiG-21s, Gnats, Hunters and Su-7s in the shooting. Hailed as one of the best war movies, it’s known for its breathtaking action sequences.
