A living room should be a comfortable and inviting space to gather your friends and family. It is the first room we decorate and the first room we show to anyone who steps through our doorstep. A living room could also be the most used room in your home between entertaining guests and Netflix binging. Therefore, the stakes are high when it comes to decorating a living room that compels you to stay.
Here are several key basics that you should keep in mind while styling a living room.
Select the right furniture
Whether you are buying new furniture or redecorating your space, the right furniture makes a huge difference. Some questions you should ask before picking the right furniture are:
a. How many people are you planning to accommodate?
b. Do you like to entertain?
c. Do you want a more formal seating or lounge?
Ensure that you make a conversation circle because, after all, the main purpose of a living area is to hang out with people you want to talk to. Keep in mind the traffic flow while arranging the furniture.
Designate a focal point
Whether it is a TV wall, an entertainment unit, a fireplace, or a large piece of furniture, a room’s natural focal point is a great way to start your styling process. All your furniture need not face the focal element but you should definitely consider centering the room around this main feature.
Pick your colour palette
A neutral colour palette is an easy way to go about it. If you have neutral walls and furniture, you can always bring a pop of colour through the cushions, rugs, plants, and other styling elements. You may also go with accent walls or a black-and-white colour palette. The ideas are endless.
Pay attention to lighting
Lighting is important and you should have natural light coming into the room as well as a floor lamp, and/or table lamp, and hanging lamp. The varying heights will make the room more interesting. This layering technique can be used to vary the living room mood and ambiance.
Balance function and beauty
Whether it is a nested coffee table or a table with inbuilt storage, look for multifunctional pieces that are both attractive as well as double up as storage space. This furniture can easily conceal your knickknacks.
Incorporate natural elements
Greens always add a pop of colour to any space. Bring a few indoors and place them in natural planter baskets. You may also consider adding some wicker furniture or accessories like rattan pendant lights, rope mirrors, or jute rugs. The key to remember is to not overdo it.
Get creative with linens!
Whether it is throws, curtains, cushion covers, rugs, or slipcovers, linens add volume, texture, and dimension to a space. A styled throw instantly makes the room cozy and welcoming. You can style it folded nicely and tucked, placed nicely on the sofa arm, or organically thrown. It is a great way to add some texture.
Create little pockets of space
Choose a corner, set up a comfortable chair with ottomans, pillows, and throws, and position a tall plant and floor lamp. There you go! You have a reading nook or tv watching spot! You can also create a hobby corner in similar lines by adding some board games or puzzles.
