Everyone needs friends; where would we be without them? Your best friend from childhood whom you haven’t seen in years, but when you hear their name, gives you a nostalgic feeling and a case of the warm fuzzies. Or your current “bros gang” or “girl squad” who has your back, no matter what? Perhaps it’s the very close network of colleagues with whom you spend more than half your waking hours? Who knows, maybe your BFF is also your forever partner? Somehow, they all bring something valuable to your lives, something to cherish.
The Best Friend AKA SOUL MATE
It’s a very valuable title to behold, to say the least. Someone whose friendship we consider the strongest, most intimate, or most important to us among all our other types of friends. They treat themselves as the VVIP of your life and lounge around and roam through your home whenever they want. “Permission”, is not part of their dictionary. Sometimes they pick up stupid fights with you to just annoy the hell out of you out of boredom. Yes, it happens!
Besties AKA FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
Actually, it is an informal shorthand for Best friends. But not so according to the dictionaries of Gen Z’s. Let’s break this ever-so-complex structure down. There is always these two people in your class who always hangs out together, you catch that one with the other person every time but they will be in a different relationship with other people. And if you go up to them and ask if they are seeing each other, they will give this standard irritating answer “We are just friends”. Here everything is in that sentence itself. End of discussion.
Social Friends AKA NIGHT OUT FRIEND
Someone whom you spend time with regularly because they’re chill and fun to be around. When you’re in the mood to socialize, have a good time, and exercise that extroverted personality, they’re your go-to person. You genuinely enjoy their company at times. But they don’t have a larger space in your life so let’s say more or less like a “Part-time Friend”.
Group Friend AKA NO STRINGS ATTACHED FRIEND
The people whom you share a friend group with. It is likely that you will see and talk to them regularly as part of your friend group, although you might not necessarily spend a lot of time with them. The catch here is that you never spend one-on-one time with them like ever! Because you just can’t stand them. They are the types whom both you and your best friend can’t stand and secretly harbor hatred because of their attitude but manage to get by. A medical miracle every single time!
Situational Friends AKA CONDITIONS APPLY FRIEND
Our friendships with people are formed in a specific setting or situation but do not extend to other areas of our lives. A few examples would be your colleagues, campers, yoga class buddies, gaming buddies, gum buddies, and even neighbors and roommates. If you are out of the room or out of the setting then they are out of your life. You are never bothered by their existence until you see them again. No chats or check-ins nothing. Once you are out of the group then they are more or less like an acquaintance.
Friend of Friend AKA BESTIE-IN-LAW
This is someone whom you have never met or even spoken to in some cases. You may not even know them, but they know everything about you. Confusing right? This makes you think maybe they are a stalker. No worries they are not. To put it simply they are friends with your best friend. As your best friend talks a lot about you and rants about everything you both did non-stop, the other person is bound to feel like they know you like they have been friends with you for so long. Thus, all the credits go to your BFF.
