Of all the women Literature in India, Sarojini Naidu’s is one that stands out differently. Sarojini Naidu inherited qualities from both her father and mother, her father who was the founder of Nizam college of Hyderabad and a scientist and her mother Mrs Varasundari was a Bengali poetess. What makes her writing so soulful?
Writing from a young age!
She used to love poetry from a very young age. She was proficient in 5 languages; Hindi, English, Persian, Urdu, Telugu and Bengali. She began writing fiction at the age of 12. She once wrote a poem that was 1300 lines long called “Lady Of The Lake”. This impressed her father a lot, and he began to encourage her work. Her Persian play “Maher Muneer” was well received by the Nawab of Hyderabad, Nizam who subsequently granted her a scholarship to study overseas.
Her poems are known not only in India but all over the world. Though she has written poems on religion, country, women’s freedom, etc., her poems on nature are most profound.
She also wrote essays and articles about her political views and women’s rights issues in India.
Nightingale of India- Sarojini Naidu
Her writing is simple with a rich usage of literary devices such as imagery and alliteration. The the lyrical and musical nature of her writings, using many rhymes and meters earned her the title Nightingale of India by Mahatma Gandhi. The sweetness and musicality of her verse is evergreen.
Sarojini reveals the heart of India through poetry
In the beginning of her career as a poet Sarojini used to try and emulate the British romantic poets but writer Edmund Morris once advised her to reveal the heart of India. The influence of British romanticism is obvious in her poetry but not without the flavour of Indian soil in it that seeps through the souls of everyone who read her poetry.
