What’s in a name, you ask? Just a bunch of alphabets grouped together with no significance unless it becomes someone’s name. These random letters coming together suddenly becomes sweet and holds a deep meaning. Have you ever wondered how important can a name be? Everyone and everything have a name of its own. The name comes first irrespective of anything. While scribbling randomly on the desks, trying out a new pen, playing FLAMES, or introducing ourselves. In one way, we dare say so, that our names embody us in some way. Though some might not agree, it could be a discussion for another day.
Why are names important?
It’s simple, in fact, it is a fundamental question one gets asked or asks anyone as we first meet. On a deeper level, it is a representation of who we are in the world and a testament to the fact that we live in this very world. In anything we do in this world; our name acts as a tool of its remembrance. And in an unconventional sense, they become a reflection of our personality. Because they can affect how people see themselves and how others perceive them too.
Furthermore, it has an unknown effect on people, making them push their boundaries. Eventually, we start believing in what our name stands for and grow as a person. That’s why many writers find it hard to name their characters. And some even spend months picking a name for their baby. In the end, it’s what we grab onto and hold close.
During our last discussion, this is how the community believes their name represents them.
Every name has a story
Most times we don’t mind being given a particular name until something happens to us to pay attention. For instance, if someone mispronounces our name, calls us by some random name, or if they cut-short our name as they wish. In the worst case, it could be the result of racism. That’s when it hits hard and we become protective of our name and our identity. On a positive note, the nicknames that our family or friends use to tease us definitely carry a fond memory attached to them, making it all the more special. A powerful aspect of a name is that it gives us all a sense of belonging. Isn’t it what every single human being yearns for?
Names hold a significant link to our roots
A name can act as a connection to our ancestors in many ways. That’s why some of them are fondly named after their grandparents or carry their family name that has been passed down generation after generation as part of their tradition. Sharing our names helps us hold on to our roots thereby creating a sense of belonging. Just by remembering one’s name, we get to know about their personality, culture, and society. Thus, even if your name had no special meaning, it still has some positive impact. Maybe that’s why people say “Make a name for yourselves”, “Live up to your name” etc. So, eventually it is a good thing, right?
Hold on! What our tribe had to say about the same is quite interesting.
Conclusion
In one way, if we dare say, they become the essence of our very being. If we look back, name shapes our first impressions, how others see us, how we perceive others, how they treat us, and other things which is difficult to put into words. Anyway, in the end, it is crucial to own one’s name proudly. On a serious note, if we think about it, a name is the only possession in the world, we carry throughout our life that can’t be traded, for it holds a different identity for a different person.
Always Remember!
Names can’t be translated. And having a name alone holds power.
