Hawkers of Kolkata is an effort to treasure fond memories of experiences with people who we interact with on a daily basis. Before they are forgotten, before they become a rarer sight, I wanted to re-live those days. Covering many markets across Kolkata, the book will take you back to the pleasant days of childhood. A must read for all the 90s kids.

I like this book for many reasons. Especially the theme of the book is a real treat. I am amazed how the little stories that we can easily find around, can be worth reading and hold learning for us.
Read this book for the first time in 2019 Blogchatter Carnival. It made me fall in love with my city once again. This book takes you through a journey in the streets of Kolkata, which is home to over 1.5 lakh street vendors – garment sellers, flower sellers, booksellers and more. They wake up early in the morning, travel long distances to set up their temporary stalls and work all day through the evening. The hawkers of Kolkata are often looked down upon as a nuisance, people encroaching into the already crowded public space. Ironically the same people would be seen blocking the sidewalks while haggling with the hawkers. In 26 chapters this book explores the other side of the world, the hawkers’ side. The author has taken the effort to go and explore the nooks and corners of Kolkata’s markets and talked to the hawkers about their daily life. I had read Isha’s posts with much interest during the AtoZ challenge and had become fascinated by her stories, the connect I felt with them, the photos and not to forget the sense of nostalgia that her experiences brought on.
